Tournament Format
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first edition to feature 48 teams, expanded from 32. Teams are divided into 12 groups of four, with the top two from each group plus the eight best third-placed teams advancing to a 32-team knockout round.
The group stage runs 72 matches over the opening weeks, followed by 32 knockout matches through to the final at MetLife Stadium.
